Poppy unknowingly gets embroiled in a sinister plot to foil her father's attempt to take over and evict the owners of a notorious gambling house owned by Mother Gin Sling, a tough, street-wise woman, played by Ona Munson.  Poppy plunges into addiction after getting hooked by the denizens of the gambling house.  This portrait wound up being used as a prop on the movie house marquee in another Pressburger film two years later called "Hangmen Also Die". Shanghai Gesture Movie Scenes Shanghai Gesture Movie Scenes This image documents a conversation between Mother Gin Sling (One Munson), owner of a shady Shanghai casino, and Guy Charteris (Walter Huston), a wealthy entrepreneur who has purchased large sections of Shanghai and has his acquiring eyes on the casino.  Maria Ouspenskaya looks on dressed in the traditional garb of The Amah’s.   The action takes place inside the casino’s large, open room where dining and gambling take place.  This image also documents the eye-catching mural created by Keye Luke, already a recognized film star, who went on later to fabled roles in film and television. Gene Tireney, seen here in her role as "Poppy" and her playful friend, Dixie, played by Phyllis Brooks are both gloated over by the supreme low-life Dr. Omar, played by Voctor Mature.  Omar has purposely currupted these two in a ploy to obstruct the plans of a wealthy Shanghai entrepreneur whose dayghter happens to be none other than the fun-loving "Poppy".
